AI-driven soil analysis is beginning to change how US farmers measure carbon, track soil health and qualify for climate finance, marking a shift that many in the sector say could accelerate the spread of regenerative agriculture.

The shift gained momentum after Perennial received approval from Verra to use its AI soil carbon model under standard carbon market rules. Analysts said the decision could help producers validate gains with fewer physical tests. A company spokesperson said the move lowers barriers for farmers and could quicken adoption, though future demand remains uncertain.

Large technology groups are expanding their role. Microsoft has widened research on its Soil Carbon Copilot, a tool that helps growers forecast how soils respond to changing weather and management choices. One researcher said farmers seek “clarity, not guesswork”, adding that sharper predictions can increase confidence in new practices. Industry observers said the company’s interest reflects broader attention from tech groups that view regenerative methods as an emerging field.

Adoption of AI systems is also rising across supply chains. Investors, certifiers and procurement teams are asking for more consistent digital evidence of soil improvement, a trend expected to prompt new modelling efforts and further testing.

Constraints persist. Specialists caution that digital estimates must remain linked to field sampling, while some warn of unresolved data rights questions and the need for clearer national standards. Even so, many analysts expect AI-guided soil assessment to become routine as carbon markets develop.

For farmers, food companies and technology developers, the signal is understated but notable. Digital tools are beginning to shape the next phase of regenerative agriculture, and many expect the pace of change to accelerate as new models mature.
